Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues, fascia, and joints of the body to recover physical function, reduce tension, and relieve pain. Massage therapy is proven to be an effective method of preventing and treating a wide range of medical conditions including occupational and posture-related problems, accident-related injuries, sports injuries, stress reduction, headaches, systemic conditions, and circulatory and nerve conditions.

Massage therapy improves posture, muscle tone, and joint mobility of the musculoskeletal system and encourages blood and lymph flow, in turn increasing the efficiency of the circulatory and immune systems.

Services provided by the RMT’s

Relaxation Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Sports Massage, Myofascial Release, Joint Mobilizations, Swedish Massage, and Trigger Point Therapy.

Hydrotherapy

We use Hydrotherapy including heat and ice for treatment. Therapeutic heating is useful for severe muscle pain and research has proven that sore muscles respond well to heat. Heat therapy works by improving circulation by promoting vasodilation and enhancing the flow of nutrients and oxygen to the injured muscle. Increasing the temperature of the affected area even slightly can soothe discomfort and increase muscle flexibility.

Heat Therapy works on the following conditions:

  • Acute soreness or muscle pain caused by over-exertion
  • Muscle cramps and spasms
  • Trigger points (muscle “knots”)
  • Stiffness and pain in specific areas related to osteoarthritis
  • Chronic pain related to fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Sleep deprivation

Therapeutic Exercise

We also utilize techniques of Therapeutic Exercise: Exercise is an essential component of any treatment regime. Abnormal motion patterns that developed as a compensation mechanism tend to remain even after the initial removal of restrictions. Exercise is essential if you plan to retrain these muscles to develop normal movement patterns, and for complete tissue remodeling after injury.

Therapeutic Exercise is a set of physical activities designed for the restoration of normal musculoskeletal function and/or reduction of pain. The RMTs will locate the root cause of the problem, remove the specific adhesions or restrictions that have formed by manual therapy, and then work through the entire kinetic chain by therapeutic exercise. To optimize body function, RMTs consider the body to be one complete, dynamic, functional unit.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy

What is a physiotherapist’s expertise?

Physiotherapists study the science of movement. They learn how to pinpoint an injury’s root causes.

When should I go see a physiotherapist?

Consider physiotherapy if you have an injury, or chronic pain that affects how you function every day. A doctor may refer you to physiotherapy after surgery such as a hip replacement, or an event such as a heart attack or stroke.

If you are planning to use health insurance to help cover the cost of physiotherapy, remember to visit your insurance company's website to ensure the physiotherapy is covered. If the physiotherapy is not covered by that insurance company, you will not be able to use your benefits and will need to pay the full cost of treatment.

What problems do physiotherapists treat?

Physiotherapists focus on both prevention and rehabilitation. Treatment can be for problems caused by injury, disease, or disability. Here are some examples:

  • Neck and back pain caused by problems in the muscles and skeleton
  • Problems in the bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments, such as arthritis and the after-effects of amputation
  • Lung problems such as asthma
  • Disability as a result of heart problems
  • Pelvic issues, such as bladder and bowel problems related to childbirth
  • Loss of mobility because of trauma to the brain or spine, or due to diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis
  • Fatigue, pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of muscle strength, for example during cancer treatment or palliative care

What can I expect at a physiotherapy session?

Your session will be unique, because it is all about you and your particular needs. In general, here’s what happens:

  • The physiotherapist learns about your medical history
  • The physiotherapist assesses and diagnoses your condition
  • You receive a treatment plan that sets goals for you
  • You are prescribed a course of exercises and any assistive devices needed
